An emergency meeting to address our mutual concern for the safety of this community has been scheduled for Wednesday, November 16th from 8pm-10pm at the Firehouse on Northern Blvd

A letter announcing this meeting will be distributed as well but please inform your neighbors and encourage them to attend.  Representatives from the local police department, Nassau County Aux. Police, and a security camera company will be in attendance.

We look forward to seeing you all there and in the interim we remind our residents of the following Security Tips, provided by Capt. Maria M. D’Amelio; Nassau County Aux. Police.

What burglars look for:

  • Mail left in mailboxes, circulars piling up in your driveway and boxes left by your front door.
  • Driveway, front walk and sidewalk not cleared of snow.
  • Blinds and shades drawn (day/ night.)
  • Overhead garage door left open during the day & night
  • Homeowner leaving/ returning at a specific time everyday.
  • No lights on in the evening. Use timers both for in/outside lights.
  • Telling people that you are leaving for vacation should be on a “need to know basis.”
  • Always set your alarm when leaving your house even for a short time.

Things to do:

  • Upgrade your alarm system. Learn how to use all the functions.
  • Place alarm company lawn signs & stickers on your property. If you have a dog, post a sign.
  • Install home camera systems so you can monitor your home from another location.
  • Install exterior lights for your safety and your neighbors.
  • Report suspicious car/truck, especially with passenger(s) idling for long periods of time.
  • House numbers must be visible from the street in the daytime as well as at night.
  • Stop your mail and newspaper while away.
  • Leave a car in your driveway.
  • Call 311 if the street light is out, or to have additional light installed.
  • Place UG sticker on your vehicle, so security personnel know that they belong there.
  • Keep car key remote in your bedroom at night. Hit “panic” if you hear or see anyone outside. It will set off your car alarm and startle intruder and alert neighbors.
  • Don’t remotely lock your car door in public. Use the lock button. Thieves can intercept your signal while you remotely lock your car. If you leave the a car in the driveway do NOT leave the garage door opener in the car.
  • Pool parking lot and School St. late evening parkers. If you see cars there, lining up, and people hanging out, please call 911 to have it investigated.
