An emergency meeting to address our mutual concern for the safety of this community has been scheduled for Wednesday, November 16th from 8pm-10pm at the Firehouse on Northern Blvd

A letter announcing this meeting will be distributed as well but please inform your neighbors and encourage them to attend.  Representatives from the local police department, Nassau County Aux. Police, and a security camera company will be in attendance.

We look forward to seeing you all there and in the interim we remind our residents of the following Security Tips, provided by Capt. Maria M. D’Amelio; Nassau County Aux. Police.

What burglars look for:

  • Mail left in mailboxes, circulars piling up in your driveway and boxes left by your front door.
  • Driveway, front walk and sidewalk not cleared of snow.
  • Blinds and shades drawn (day/ night.)
  • Overhead garage door left open during the day & night
  • Homeowner leaving/ returning at a specific time everyday.
  • No lights on in the evening. Use timers both for in/outside lights.
  • Telling people that you are leaving for vacation should be on a “need to know basis.”
  • Always set your alarm when leaving your house even for a short time.

Things to do:

  • Upgrade your alarm system. Learn how to use all the functions.
  • Place alarm company lawn signs & stickers on your property. If you have a dog, post a sign.
  • Install home camera systems so you can monitor your home from another location.
  • Install exterior lights for your safety and your neighbors.
  • Report suspicious car/truck, especially with passenger(s) idling for long periods of time.
  • House numbers must be visible from the street in the daytime as well as at night.
  • Stop your mail and newspaper while away.
  • Leave a car in your driveway.
  • Call 311 if the street light is out, or to have additional light installed.
  • Place UG sticker on your vehicle, so security personnel know that they belong there.
  • Keep car key remote in your bedroom at night. Hit “panic” if you hear or see anyone outside. It will set off your car alarm and startle intruder and alert neighbors.
  • Don’t remotely lock your car door in public. Use the lock button. Thieves can intercept your signal while you remotely lock your car. If you leave the a car in the driveway do NOT leave the garage door opener in the car.
  • Pool parking lot and School St. late evening parkers. If you see cars there, lining up, and people hanging out, please call 911 to have it investigated.

We hope you are enjoying the warm weather in the Gardens this fall! Please read the following Newsletter to stay informed in University Gardens !

The Board of University Gardens is making a significant effort to reach out to residents via periodic electronic newsletters and mailings for important information. If you are aware of any residents in the neighborhood that are not receiving these electronic transmissions, kindly ask them to email: ugpoasec@gmail.com to be added to the list. We would greatly appreciate it!

Noteworthy News:

First, many of you have heard about the major CRASH that occurred on Merrivale Rd recently. One of our young neighbors was driving north on Merrivale Rd and crashed into a tree. The resident's injuries were extensive and required urgent hospitalization. While we wish him a speedy recovery and extend our heartfelt concern to his family, we are reminded that the speed limit is only 25 mph and urge residents to follow the "rules of the road" for everyone's safety.

Hurricane Irene blew past us a couple of months ago. She left some residual damage to our neighborhood, specifically to a row of three homes on Somerset Drive South . More than 12 locusts and poplars fell like pins in a bowling alley. Possibly an accompanying tornado ripped through their yards. Damage to the yards, homes and cars ensued but thankfully, none of the residents were hurt. Since this incident, we are reminded of how important it is to prune ours trees. Permission is not needed and can be done at your discretion. We remind you that if you would like a tree removed, that you obtain the appropriate permission from the Board of University Gardens. Penalties can be imposed if rules aren't followed. Trees that are removed in the front yard need the Town's permission and you must pay a small fee.

We are fortunate enough to have "back-door" sanitation service. You are paying for this service. This service is to ensure that our community looks beautiful at all times. Unfortunately, some residents are not aware, or persist in leaving garbage at the curb. Whether it's just debris or last nights dinner, lets keep it in the back or on the side in the trash cans! Again, putting it at the curb is not necessary and can make your house and the neighborhood look less appealing. As many of you know, recyclables should be placed in appropriate storage containers and placed at the curb on Wednesday mornings.

Code Enforcement of The Town of North Hempstead periodically circulates through the neighborhood. They are looking for violations, like trash at the curb following pick up or watering of the property during daytime hours. A number of residents were given warnings by them.

A Bit of Advice:

The next time you go to the supermarket...consider this! If a thief takes your car, they may be able to use your GPS and garage door opener to successfully break into your home! This has been done! Please consider the following. Enter the local gas station or corner office building as "home".

That's all for now from the Board of University Gardens .
Have a safe and healthy season!
